Have you ever wondered, “What are chocolate truffles and what is the history behind them?” The origins of the chocolate truffle belongs to France, that much is almost certain, but which Frenchman and which year, that depends on which culinary history book you choose to believe. Sometime around the turn of the nineteenth century or soon after, the chocolate truffle arrived. Some say it was an accident, a literal case of spilled milk, when a bowl of hot heavy whipping cream was accidentally poured in a bowl of chopped chocolate chunks. When stirred together, this chocolate mixture became chocolate ganache, the creamy center of the truffle, which was then rolled in unsweetened cocoa powder. The result: a small delicacy that resembled the dark and rumpled mushrooms also prized for their deliciousness.
Today, many store-bought and homemade truffles have a hard chocolate shell with a soft center. While traditional chocolate bonbons are made with milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate, other ingredients can be added such as vanilla, peppermint extract, coconut, peanut butter, and so on. At Vosges Haut-Chocolat, our rolled truffles are hand-made and highlight exotic flavors from around the world.
Since its beginnings, these chocolate bonbons have also been at the center of Vosges Haut-Chocolat’s own history. Upon her return from a trip around the world, Katrina took to her Logan Square kitchen in Chicago to hand roll the very first homemade chocolate truffles for the brand. Starting with the Naga truffle, Katrina has added the ingredients of her travels into her truffle recipes and Travel the World Through Chocolate was born.
Today, Vosges truffles are still made using the freshest, natural ingredients and only the finest pure chocolate in our Chocolate Temple.
