Travel the World through Chocolate. Destination: New York City
Vosges Haut-Chocolat opens its first purple door in New York's Soho neighborhood. It will prove to be the most daring and avant-garde venture this chic chocolatier, Katrina Markoff, has attempted yet.
A disciple of Ferran and Alberto Adria of Spain's famed El Bulli restaurant, Markoff stirs up many of her exotic influences into her chocolate and her store design. Each area of the store will appeal to a different sense and emotion. The sleek Italian marble "sensory" table will feel cool to the touch as it represents the purity in Markoff's art. The raw aspect of the cement column in the middle of the space represents the beginning of the creative process. Large crystal chandeliers hang ornately overhead bring a kiss of New Orleans to this modern coiffe. A multimedia concept runs its thread through the store where independent films are shown, iPods are displayed and modern artwork color the walls. Chocolate scented, leather jackets are hung for sale… a mere $900. A place where fashion meets chocolate meets sensory awareness.
IMAGINE: the city heat and grime beating against your face…your feet pounding on top of the hard pavement…with each step your mind drifts off to hopes of some far away land, dreaming just for a moment that you could be transported to an exotic destination.
Suddenly, you catch the faint aroma of the sweet, succulent smell of chocolate. Before you know it you are crossing the espresso hued floor, gliding up to the cocoa bar, and ordering a Parisian chocolat chaud. Ah, one sip of the tonic and you dream of sitting in a Parisian café surrounded by the bon-vivants of the 1920's.
The lights dim, the music comes to a halt and a scene from the film Buffalo '66 projects on the wall. The lights come up, the music begins and you wander through the space eyeing all the sweet, succulent treats. Will you dare to taste the Rooster truffle, a taleggio cheese and chocolate truffle? Or will you explore the most noted Black Pearl truffle with its infusions of Japanese ginger, wasabi and dark chocolate? The options go on...
Traveling deeper through the store you come across the phrase There are only 128 Nagaland people living in the United States…eat curry. Hmmm... you take a bite of the Naga truffle, the sweet curry, coconut and milk chocolate transport you to India.
Wherever your destination may be: India, Japan, Australia, Jamaica, you can be sure Vosges Haut-Chocolat will make it decadent. An affordable luxury that is not only luscious, but for a moment, even just for a moment you escape within yourself, you escape to the 'now'.
An escape to a place where your only thoughts rest in your mouth, on your palate and your imagination takes you away…ah chocolate!
