Brownies and Cookies / Red Fire Brownie Single

Two traditions join forces: The ancient Aztec and Mayan ritual of chillies + chocolate and the brownie, a distinctly American concoction popular since the early 1900s. We blend ancho, chipotle and guajillo chili peppers into the gooey brownie batter with cocoa nibs adding to the texture and cinnamon fueling the chili inferno. Feel the spice as it lingers on your tongue and savor the dense, fudgy brownie.

Brownie (brow-nee): A decadent chocolate confection; one part fudge, one part cake and 100% American. Most agree that the brownie was named after its rich brown color, but the origin of the recipe remains debatable. Credit is often given to Fannie Merrit Farmer, who published her brownie recipe in the 1896 version of The Boston Cooking School Cook Book using molasses instead of chocolate. It wasn't until 1906 when the Walter Lowney Chocolate Company threw some chocolate into the mix that the brownie that we know and love today was born. Still, a popular urban legend lives on. A young housewife from Bangor, Maine forgets to add baking powder to her chocolate cake and accidentally creates the "Bangor Brownie." This recipe remained popular for years, despite its questionable origin.

The essence of comfort food, our brownie upholds the all-American tradition but adds the spicy tingle of chili peppers to create a unique blend of cultures. The Mayan and Aztec people of Mexico and Central America were the first to make chocolate. They harvested, fermented, and ground cacao (kah-KOW) seeds and mixed them with spices and corn meal to create a frothy, spiced drink called xocatyl. We mix Red Fire chocolate chunks into the gooey brownie batter to honor this ancient chocolate tradition. Crunch on cocoa nibs, roasted pieces of cacao bean that explode a bitter chocolate sensation in your mouth, transporting you back to the tropical rainforest where the Theobroma cacao tree grows. Taste the spice as it lingers on your tongue, savor the brownie sugar rush.
