Swanson's Merlot grapes bask in the sunlight of two estate vineyards: the mid-valley Oakville Cross Road vineyard and the Schmidt Vineyards, adjacent to the Mayacamas Mountains. This round and supple Merlot (blended with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah) expresses ripe, juicy flavors on your palate almost immediately, followed by an undercurrent of smoke and espresso. Winemaker Chris Phelps describes the wine as an "iron fist in a velvet glove wine, with the extract and power expected of its Oakville provenance, yet possessing the finesse, grace and complexity of a right-bank Bordeaux."
